The show features a diverse and talented cast of mostly Asian and Indigenous actors, such as Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Maria Zhang as Suki, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh, Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, Elizabeth Yu as Azula, Tamlyn Tomita as Yukari, Arden Cho as June, and Utkarsh Ambudkar as King Bumi.

The first season of the original animated series, which included 20 episodes, is adapted for the television series. It tells the story of Aang’s waking from a 100-year sleep within an iceberg to his arrival at the Northern Water Tribe, where he intends to apprentice himself to a master waterbending practitioner.
