Introduction:

Marvel’s highly anticipated revival of Daredevil arrives with a devastating opening that proves the Disney+ series maintains the gritty, violent tone of its Netflix predecessor. The first two episodes establish a compelling new status quo while honoring what made the original series special.

At Josie’s Bar, where Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) celebrate their successful legal firm, the premiere begins with a surprisingly cordial reunion. In a startling scene shot in a striking one-shot technique reminiscent of the original series’ hallway battles, Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) unleashes a vicious attack that ends Foggy’s life, shattering this comfortable familiarity.

A year later, we find Matt managing a new legal practice alongside Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James), after the tragedy causes him to give up his Daredevil character. With Matt’s retirement from vigilantism and his adversary Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) coming out of hiding to run for mayor of New York City, the episode skillfully creates the new status quo.

The main focus of the episode is a tense confrontation between Matt and Fisk in an electric restaurant. Fisk says, “It’s hard to come to terms with a violent nature,” in reference to Matt’s attempt to murder Bullseye, as the two men skirt the issue with polite threats. As Fisk, D’Onofrio never loses his charm, especially when an adoring fan interrupts him and causes anger to flash over his face.

The focus of the second episode changes to the series’ central legal and political intrigue. Now that he is mayor, Fisk fights back against vigilantism while facing opposition from the NYPD, who recall his criminal history. Matt takes on the case of White Tiger, a vigilante who is suspected of killing a police officer, Hector Ayala (Kamar de los Reyes).

Matt’s developing romance with therapist Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva), who, unbeknownst to him, also acts as the Fisks’ marital counselor, is one of the episode’s strongest character moments. The author skillfully examines how Matt and Fisk battle their aggressive tendencies while attempting to change their ways.

When it does occur, the action is severe and decisive. Matt is forced to accept the darkness he has been avoiding as the episode comes to a close, when he confronts dishonest police officers who are trying to assassinate a crucial witness in the White Tiger case. One officer’s arm has a tattoo of the Punisher that suggests more significant confrontations to come.

Both episodes effectively add new characters to the mix while showcasing excellent performances from the returning actors. The show finds new perspectives on well-known issues of justice, morality, and the price of violence while retaining the sophisticated tone and nuanced characterisation of its predecessor.
