The most recent film in the DC cinematic world, Blue Beetle, is a fun and appropriate homage to classic superhero films. The film, which was directed by Angel Manuel Soto, centers on new college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduea), who finds a mystery alien artifact and becomes bonded to it, granting him incredible abilities. Jaime must use his newly discovered powers, along with the assistance of his family and friends, to foil a sinister scheme by the evil Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon).

An excellent illustration of how to properly tell a superhero origin tale is Blue Beetle. The film does a fantastic job of highlighting Mexican culture while still being heartwarming and humorous. A close-knit Latino family unit that viewers can relate to and identify with is the Reyes family. Additionally, the film does a superb job of combining the fantasy components with the more realistic family drama.

The spectacular effects are top-notch, and the action sequences are expertly done and thrilling. The visually arresting and modern Blue Beetle costume is a wonderful counterpoint to the more realistic family story. The film does a fantastic job of weaving allusions to the lengthy, geeky past of this underwhelming figure.

The only drawback to Blue Beetle is that it has an old-fashioned vibe. It’s a polished artifact from the past of comic book movies, and it lacks the vitality and newness of the more recent superhero flicks. Victoria Kord, the antagonist, is similarly somewhat flat and lacks substance. Blue Beetle, though, is also a little retro. It seems like a film that ought to have been produced ten years ago. While its corny humor and flashy action sequences may amuse children and comic book aficionados, they might not satisfy adults who were expecting for a fresh take on DC stories.

In the end, Blue Beetle is a charming and goofy homage to DC‘s earlier superhero movies. Although it offers a novel and interesting perspective on the superhero origin narrative, viewers might wish for more.Overall, Blue Beetle is an enjoyable and appropriate homage to old-school superhero films.
