1.Introduction:
Napoleon 2023 is Ridley Scott’s big-budget war epic, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the iconic French leader. This movie follows Napoleon’s rise to power, his relationship with Josephine (Vanessa Kirby), and his warmongering ways. While the battle sequences are undeniably impressive, the film lacks the emotional depth and passion needed to make it truly memorable.

3.The Cast:
The main cast of Napoleon (2023) is led by Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte, and Vanessa Kirby as Josephine de Beauharnais. Phoenix gives a restrained performance that captures Napoleon’s nerves in a way that hints at a more human portrayal than the rest of the film allows. Kirby’s Josephine is mysterious and her character is reduced to a mirror for Napoleon before her character disappears into the historical fact that she couldn’t give Napoleon an heir, leading to their divorce. Other notable cast members include Rupert Everett as the Iron Duke Wellington, Paul Rhys as Talleyrand, and Tahar Rahim as Paul Barras.
4.The Story:
Napoleon (2023) follows Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise to power during the French Revolution, and his subsequent warmongering ways. The film opens during the French Revolution, as Bonaparte ascends the political ladder of France with his war acumen above all else. An early sequence that presents the Siege of Toulon in 1793 with stunning and graphic detail is a highlight. Shortly after meeting, Napoleon and Josephine’s relationship is explored, with the letters from Napoleon to Josephine forming the backbone of the film. The film also charts Napoleon’s battles, coups and revolutions, and his death in exile in the South Atlantic.
5.The Good:
The technical acumen on display in Napoleon (2023) is impressive, with some battle sequences that hum with energy. The cast is strong, with Phoenix, Kirby, Everett, Rhys, and Rahim all giving solid performances. The story is interesting, and the film does a good job of charting Napoleon’s rise to power and his warmongering ways.
6.The Bad:
Sadly, the film lacks the intensity and emotional nuance necessary to be genuinely unforgettable. Phoenix’s acting is too subdued to match the magnetism of the lead role, and the connection between Napoleon and Josephine is never really examined.
Too many times throughout the movie, the emotions are empty, and Josephine never seems to know how to portray her part. In addition, the movie is flavorless and offers Napoleon little interior life as compensation for putting up with all the clumsy shoving. Additionally, the movie lacks a distinct point of view, and the honor roll that counts the enormous human cost of Napoleon’s military aspirations before the end credits points to a far more serious picture than the action-packed epic you just saw.
7.Conclusion:
Napoleon (2023) is an impressive but flavourless epic. The technical acumen on display is impressive, and the cast is strong. The story is interesting, but the film lacks flavour and doesn’t give Napoleon much inner life as a reward for putting up with all the amateurish thrusting. The film also doesn’t give a clear point of view, and the pre-end-credits honour roll counting the vast human cost of Napoleon’s military ambitions suggests an altogether more sober movie than the action-packed epic you just watched.
