Control Resonant Story Explained: The Full Control Saga, Ending and Alan Wake Connection

Control Resonant story explained - Dylan Faden fighting paranatural enemies in a warped Manhattan

Welcome To MovieAnimeX! Two siblings. One secret government agency. A building that is bigger on the inside, and a whole city that suddenly stops obeying gravity. Here is the full Control and Control Resonant story explained in plain, simple words, plus how Alan Wake ties into all of it. Heavy Spoilers Alert.

Remedy makes games that are weird in the best possible way. Control (2019) dropped you into a shapeshifting skyscraper full of possessed agents. Control Resonant, released on September 24, 2026, lets that weirdness spill onto the streets of Manhattan. If either ending left you thinking “wait, what just happened?”, this is the Control Resonant story explained simply, start to finish.

Control Resonant Story Explained in 30 Seconds

Short on time? Here is the whole saga in five lines:

  • Jesse and Dylan Faden were split apart as kids after a paranatural event in Ordinary, Maine.
  • In Control, Jesse finds the secret Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), becomes its Director, beats back the Hiss and saves Dylan, who falls into a coma.
  • In Control Resonant, seven years later, Dylan wakes up, Jesse is missing, and a new force called the Patterning is bending Manhattan out of shape.
  • Dylan traces the Patterning to an entity called the Hedron and kills it, which should kill him too. Jesse takes his place.
  • The game ends with Dylan free for the first time in his life and Jesse unconscious inside the Oldest House.

It All Starts in Ordinary, Maine

Long before any of this, Jesse and Dylan were just two kids in a quiet little town called Ordinary. One day they found an old slide projector. Simple. Harmless. Boring.

Except it was none of those things. In the world of Control, everyday objects can turn into Objects of Power, and this projector opened a door to somewhere else. What followed is called an Altered World Event (AWE), and the adults of Ordinary simply vanished.

Then the FBC rolled into town. This secret US agency hunts down and locks away anything “paranatural”. They took the projector, and they took Dylan. Jesse slipped away.

That one night shapes everything that follows. Jesse spends years looking for her brother. Dylan grows up inside the Bureau as a test subject, code-named Prime Candidate 6, groomed as a possible future Director. It ends badly. People die, and Dylan is locked away.

Control (2019) Story Explained: Jesse Comes Looking

Control opens with Jesse walking into the Oldest House, the FBC’s hidden headquarters in New York. From the outside it is a grey brutalist tower that nobody notices. Inside, it is endless, shifting and very much alive.

She is guided by Polaris, a calm voice in her head that has been with her since Ordinary. Within minutes she finds Director Zachariah Trench dead in his office, picks up his shapeshifting Service Weapon, and is chosen as the new Director by The Board, an otherworldly council that speaks in riddles.

The Hiss Invasion

The Hiss is a hostile resonance, think of it as a reality virus. It possesses people and turns them into floating, chanting husks. And the Bureau let it in themselves. Trench and Dr. Casper Darling kept using the slide projector from Ordinary to reach an entity they called the Hedron. They opened a door, and something far nastier walked through.

Jesse fights through the House with survivors like researcher Emily Pope and Ahti, the strangely chilled-out Finnish janitor. Along the way she cleanses Control Points and unlocks powers like telekinesis and levitation.

Finding Dylan

When Jesse finally reaches Dylan, it is not a happy reunion. He has been caged for years, and he has embraced the Hiss as his way out. By the climax, it has its hooks in him deep.

Jesse pushes the Hiss back, restores Polaris and stops the invasion from spreading. Dylan survives, but he slips into a coma. Jesse accepts the Director job and seals the Oldest House in lockdown, with the Hiss still trapped inside.

The Alan Wake Connection Explained

Quick refresher: Alan Wake is a novelist who vanished at Cauldron Lake in Bright Falls in 2010, trapped in the Dark Place, a dimension where whatever he writes can become real. (Our Alan Wake timeline explained covers it all.)

To the FBC, Bright Falls was just another Altered World Event. Control’s 2020 AWE expansion is where the two series officially meet: Jesse hunts a monstrous Dr. Emil Hartman (the shady doctor from the first Alan Wake), sees Alan’s writing bleeding into the Oldest House, and learns another event is coming to Bright Falls.

It does. In Alan Wake 2 (2023), FBC agents arrive at Cauldron Lake. Then Alan Wake 2’s The Lake House DLC (October 2024) follows FBC agent Kiran Estevez into a Bureau facility on the lake. In an optional scene she comes across Dylan, awake in a glass cell, giving cryptic answers. Fans spotted it instantly: it was a teaser for Control 2, the game that became Control Resonant.

Is Alan Wake in Control Resonant?

Sort of, and it is one of the best secrets in the game. In the Evacuation Zone, near Railyard Street Station, there is a corrupted apartment with an old TV. Switch it on and you unlock a recording called The Master of Many Worlds: grainy footage of Alan Wake working as a night watchman, wearing an FBC patch, with detective Alex Casey beside him. Alan talks about sleepless nights and the shadow of the Scratcher that keeps finding him.

Is it secretly teasing Alan Wake 3? Creative director Mikael Kasurinen told VGC that Resonant is not showing off Remedy’s next game, and that the Alan Wake bits are the only crossover. Treat it as a love letter to fans, not a trailer.

Control Resonant Story Explained: Now Dylan Comes Looking

Here is the clever part. Control Resonant flips the first game upside down, and sometimes that is literal.

Seven years after Control, Jesse’s lockdown of the Oldest House finally fails. Dylan opens his eyes in a glass containment cell, and the first face he sees is his sister’s. She drives a strange black weapon into him and he gasps awake. That weapon is the Aberrant, a shapeshifting melee weapon that becomes Dylan’s answer to Jesse’s gun. Then she is gone.

Outside, things are a mess. The Hiss and the Mold are loose again, and something new has arrived: the Patterning. It folds streets in on themselves, tips skyscrapers sideways and makes gravity optional. Its strongest monsters are the Resonants, boss-sized entities that rule different zones of the city.

With its Director missing, the FBC does something desperate. It lets Dylan out. Emily Pope agrees to free him on one condition: he wears a Mobile Containment Device (MCD), a kill switch that can knock him out or kill him. A new agent, Zoe De Vera, holds the remote and talks him through every mission over the radio.

Dylan has two goals: help contain the crisis and find his sister. For a guy who has spent nearly his whole life in a cell or a coma, a broken New York is basically his first real look at the world. That is what makes him such a likeable hero. He is awkward, wary and learning to be a person again, while everyone around him still sees a file marked “dangerous”.

The Faults, the Patterning and the Hedron

As Dylan fights across Manhattan, he keeps getting pulled into Faults, warped rifts where he and Jesse can reach each other and perform a kind of ritual together. These are the emotional heart of the game. Jesse remembers their childhood and the guilt of escaping Ordinary while Dylan was taken.

Each Fault also leaves Dylan with a new power, like Shift (walking along flipped gravity) and Reach (crossing huge gaps). So the more he reconnects with his sister, the more of the city he can explore. Nice touch, Remedy.

Piece by piece, the siblings trace the Patterning back to one source: the Hedron.

If that name rings a bell, it should. In Control, “Hedron” was what Trench and Darling called the entity they reached through the slide projector, the one Jesse knew as Polaris. Resonant reuses the name but never fully confirms whether this is the same being or another one of its kind. Remedy clearly wants us arguing about it in the comments.

Eventually the Hedron reaches the Oldest House itself and starts Patterning the Bureau’s home. Dylan fights his way to its core for the final battle.

Control Resonant Ending Explained

Beating the Hedron’s physical form is not the end. The real fight moves inside Dylan’s own mind.

As he starts to lose himself, Dylan tells Zoe to trigger the MCD. It does not stop the transformation, it only stops him fighting back, so he tears it off. Inside his head he faces old ghosts, including a memory of Dr. Darling holding a device to him and promising to fix him. The Board speaks to him. And then Dylan kills the Hedron.

Here is the catch: the Hedron had anchored itself to Dylan. Killing it should have killed him too.

Dylan collapses in total darkness. A shaft of light opens and Jesse runs to him. Moments later, their places are swapped. Dylan is awake. Jesse is lying still. Reports from players say she used the slide projector, the very object that started their story, to take the hit for him.

What Happens to Dylan and Jesse?

In the epilogue, Dylan sits with Zoe high above the city and admits the Bureau is finally loosening its grip. A last quest called The Beginning starts in his own apartment. His birth certificate has been reissued, and he is now an FBC consultant instead of a prisoner.

He then visits Jesse in the Oldest House. She is unconscious in a medical room, looked after by Emily Pope, and the two of them talk about finding a way to wake her.

So, does Jesse die? No. She is alive, but comatose, in the exact spot Dylan was at the end of Control.

What the Ending Really Means

The ending is a mirror. In Control, Jesse saved Dylan and he slept for years. In Resonant, she saves him again, and this time he is the one who walks away. Kasurinen has described the two games as expressions of the two siblings, and that final scene makes it feel deeply personal.

The quest title says it all. This is not the end of the Faden story, it is The Beginning. Remedy has not announced a third game, but “wake up Jesse” feels like the most obvious next chapter in gaming right now.

Do You Need to Play Control Before Control Resonant?

No. Remedy built Resonant as a fresh entry point, and there is an official recap in the main menu. Dylan is new to this world too, so the game explains things as he learns them.

But if you can, play Control first. The ending hits twice as hard when you have already walked in Jesse’s shoes.

Control Resonant Story FAQs

What is Control Resonant about?

Control Resonant follows Dylan Faden, Jesse Faden’s younger brother. Seven years after Control, he wakes from a coma, is released by the Federal Bureau of Control, and fights a reality-bending force called the Patterning across Manhattan while searching for his missing sister.

Is Control Resonant a sequel to Control?

Yes. It is a direct story sequel set seven years after Control (2019), but Remedy built it as a fresh starting point, and a recap of the first game is available from the main menu.

Does Jesse Faden die in Control Resonant?

No. At the end, Jesse takes Dylan’s place after he kills the Hedron. She survives but is left unconscious in the Oldest House, and Dylan vows to find a way to wake her.

What is the Hedron in Control Resonant?

How is Control connected to Alan Wake?

Both games share the Remedy Connected Universe. The FBC investigated Alan Wake’s disappearance at Bright Falls, Control’s AWE expansion brought Alan Wake lore into the Oldest House, and Alan Wake 2’s The Lake House DLC teased Dylan Faden before Control Resonant was revealed.

Where is the Alan Wake easter egg in Control Resonant?

It is in the Evacuation Zone, in a corrupted apartment block near Railyard Street Station. Interact with the TV to unlock a recording called The Master of Many Worlds featuring Alan Wake and Alex Casey.
